Hypothetical Syllogism of the Day: Carrie Prejean Edition

I have had a long-standing interest in the field of logic. This is not as boring as it seems; it is just very close. Regardless of how boring this seems or is, the tools of logic are very useful.

This is our basic premise:

• P --> Q.
• Q --> R.
• Therefore, P --> R.

This is what Wikipedia calls the Hypothetical Syllogism. It is a valid argument. We'll be working along these lines for the rest of our syllogism here. We will let P equal "Prejean", Q will equal "pron", and R will equal "teh gay" (sorry, too much Rachel Maddow). We can, therefore, replace the syllogism with the statement:

• If Prejean makes pron (you know, like she does).
• Pron makes people teh gay (Per Coburn aide Dave Weigel at the Values Voter Summit).
• Therefore, Prejean makes people teh gay.

By this line of reasoning, she is in fact working against her opposite marriage "principles". Obviously, as a beauty pageant contestant, she is one of the smartest people in existence and so she must have seen this logical progression, which means she isn't quite a bigot, just perpetrating a clever ruse. See, even on a google image search for Ms. Prejean, I had a hard time finding anything where she had more clothes on than a bikini; obviously she feels strongly about this issue.

I should like to applaud her for her courage.
