"The Computer Did It"

As of late, I've been thinking aloud here about thesis ideas so I can finally finish the M.A. I've been working on, well, forever. This is yet another one of those posts.

Except it's an idea I think I can wrap my tiny head around: a study of how people react to messages on their computer. Whose fault is it, really, that the computer crashed or who, in fact, created the error message. My initial thought is that the computer is trying to tell me something, right? Well, that's not necessarily the case; the case is that the programmer is trying to tell you something, but, in communication, it's not just what the issuer of the statement does or says that matters; an equally important idea is how the receiver interprets this statement.

So, what do they say? What do they believe?

So, a random idea is a survey of computer users; and also a survey of computer power users or administrators. Do they differ in their usage? What does it mean, if my hypothesis is true...
